What homeopathy to take for Sleep

Homeopathy is an alternative treatment that is great for solving sleep trouble. It works on the premise, 'like cures like' (similia similibus curentur), a claim that a substance that causes the symptoms of a disease in healthy people would cure similar symptoms in sick people. As always with homoeopathy, the remedy must be chosen according to the symptoms of the individual. Here are some of the top remedies according to symptoms:

Arsenicum Album (Ars)

Those who need Arsenicum are nearly always anxious and restless. Anxiety, fear, or worry prevents them from sleep. Works for sleeplessness from physical exertion, as well. Symptoms include lying awake with restlessness, tossing and turning and those who can only sleep with head raised and find it hard to go back to sleep after waking.

Coffea Cruda (Coff)

Coffee is well known for producing sleeplessness but because of homeopathy’s ‘like treats like’ effect, it will relieve insomnia when given in crude, or especially homeopathic form. The type of symptoms it relieves are those produced by coffee. They are: sleeplessness from rapid thoughts or an active mind; constant flow of ideas; physical restlessness; nervous energy; excitement. Can also be used to counteract the effects of a caffeinated product that has been taken too close to bed-time. Supporting symptoms include- Unable to sleep from the excitement of a surprise, or good or bad news, and oncoming palpitation with sleeplessness.

Gelsemium Sempervirens (Gels)

Sleeplessness from anticipatory anxiety. Dull, drowsy mind – hard to think yet difficult to go to sleep. Insomnia from exhaustion. Hard to get deep sleep. Becomes worse from bad news and thinking about problems. Other symptoms include; sleeplessness with teething or itching on head, face, neck, and shoulders. Also meant to cure sleeplessness caused by withdrawal from alcohol.

Ignatia Amara (Ign)

To be taken if sleepless after a recent disappointment or grief. Waking easily from sleep. Waking from the jerking of a limb. Congestive headaches following anger or grief; that gets worse with smoking or smelling tobacco. Little colic condition at all times and a weak feeling in the abdomen, are all signs you may need Ignatia.

Nux Vomica (Nux-v)

The key symptoms are; Frequent yawning, irritability from loss of sleep and falling asleep before normal bedtime and then waking at around 3–4am. Waking up feeling tired, weak, and not wanting to get up. You also know you need this when you have sleeplessness from the excessive consumption of coffee, alcohol, or drugs (therapeutic or recreational). Tendency to lie on back with arms under head. Sleeplessness from mental strain and stress or excessive study. Drowsy after meals and in early evening. Grogginess on waking in morning.
