In India, bed sizes are quoted in feet, mattresses are sold in inches, and half the internet answers in centimetres. Here is the whole thing in one place. A 5x6 bed is 60 x 72 inches, or 152 x 183 cm — a Queen. A 6x6 bed is 72 x 72 inches (183 x 183 cm) — a King. A 6x7 bed is 72 x 84 inches, or 183 x 213 cm.

Bed size chart: feet, inches and cm

Width first, then length — the way every Indian mattress is quoted. To convert any bed yourself: multiply feet by 12 for inches, and inches by 2.54 for centimetres.

Two things worth knowing before you go further. Indian size names are not standardised — one brand's Queen is another brand's XL Queen, so always buy by the number, not the name. And 72 x 84 inches — the largest mattress Sunday makes — is often called a California King, but in India it is simply the longest King.

Custom sizes: if your bed isn't a standard size

It very often isn't. Carpenter-built beds in India are rarely a round number, which is why this is the single most common question we get.

One thing to check before you order a custom size: a mattress can be slightly bigger than the frame it sits in. A 72 x 78 mattress sits perfectly well on a 71 x 77 bed. Measure the inside of your bed frame, and if a standard size is within an inch either way, take the standard size — it will arrive sooner and fit just as well.

How to measure your bed

1. Measure the inside of the bed frame, not the outside — the outer edge includes the frame's own timber.
2. Measure the width across the middle, and the length down the middle. Old frames are rarely square, so if the two ends differ, go with the smaller number.
3. Write it down as width x length, in inches. That is the order every Indian mattress size is quoted in.
4. If you are replacing a mattress rather than buying a bed, measure the old mattress too — it may not have been the right size either.

Choosing between the sizes

Single, 36 inches wide. One sleeper. Standard for a child's room or a guest room.

Diwan, 30 inches wide. Narrower than a Single. Made for diwan and daybed frames, and for rooms where 36 inches will not go in. Sunday makes this in the Ortho Memory only.

Double, 48 inches wide. Also called Full. Two adults, at 24 inches each — that is narrower than a single bed apiece, so it suits a couple who sleep close, or one adult who wants room to move.

Queen, 60 inches wide. The default choice for a master bedroom. Thirty inches per person, and room for a small child in the middle.

XL Queen, 66 inches wide. Six inches wider than a Queen, three inches more each. The size to look at when a King will not fit through the door or into the room.

On length: 72 inches suits sleepers up to about 5 feet 10. If either of you is close to six feet, go to 75 or 78 inches. It is a much cheaper fix than realising it afterwards.

Mattress thickness

Thickness is a separate decision from size, and it is mostly about the mattress you choose rather than the bed you own.

What thickness does change is how your bed sits. A box-style or storage bed with a deep recess wants a thicker mattress so it does not sink below the frame edge; a low platform bed is fine with 6 inches. And if you use a fitted sheet, check its pocket depth against the mattress you are buying — or use a Sunday mattress protector, which is cut with side skirting to fit.

Most of these are American names that turn up in search results and on imported bed frames. They are listed here so you can convert them, not because you need them.

Split sizes are two separate mattresses side by side, bought when two people want different firmness. Sunday does not sell a split mattress as a single product, but two Sunday mattresses of the same length will do the same job.

What is the most common mattress size in India?
The two sizes bought most often are the Queen at 60 x 78 inches and the King at 72 x 78 inches. Both fit a standard master bedroom, and the 78-inch length suits sleepers up to about six feet — which is why it outsells the shorter 72-inch lengths.

Is a Double bed the same as a Full bed?
Yes. In India the same 48-inch-wide mattress is called both.

What is the difference between Queen and XL Queen?
Width only. A Queen is 60 inches wide, an XL Queen is 66 — three inches more per person. Both come in the same lengths.

Is there anything smaller than a Single?
Yes, the Diwan at 30 inches wide against the Single's 36.

How much bigger should a bed frame be than the mattress?
It shouldn't be bigger. Frame and mattress should match, and a mattress that is an inch larger than the frame is fine — it will simply overhang very slightly. A mattress that is smaller than the frame is the problem: the gap lets the edges break down and is easy to slip into.

My mattress is smaller than my bed. What can I do?
For a gap of an inch or two, a foam filler strip or a firm bolster along the edge works. For anything larger, get a custom size made to the frame's actual measurements.

Can I get a size that isn't on this page?
