basics of heart health on the American Heart Association list, and sleep is one of them1

Where should you start?

You can start with any chapter. Each one stands on its own.

What are the benefits of sleep?

The benefits of sleep are a body that repairs itself, a brain that stores what you learned and a mind that can handle the next day.

While you sleep, your body heals and repairs your heart and blood vessels. Your brain forms new pathways that help you learn and remember2.

Sleep is part of good health, as much as food and exercise. The American Heart Association counts it as one of its 8 basics of heart health1.

Hours are only half of it. Keeping the same times every night matters too (Chapter 2).

Why is good sleep harder in India?

Good sleep is harder in India because many of us sleep late and hot, and often in broken pieces.

Dinner at 10 pm and a long commute cut the night short. A shared room and a fan pushing warm air break it up.

In a 2025 online survey, 59% of Indian respondents said they get less than 6 hours of unbroken sleep a night3. A survey asks people how they sleep. It does not measure it.

Then there are exam nights in March, 12-hour night shifts and weddings that end after midnight. Chapter 2 covers the bedroom heat and late dinners. Chapter 4 covers children who share a bed or a room.

Sleep is not luck. A few steady habits, a cool dark room and the right place to lie down make most of the difference.

What are the benefits of sleeping early?

The main benefit of sleeping early is more hours of sleep, because most of us cannot choose when we wake up.

Work, school buses and the morning tea set the alarm. So in most Indian homes, an earlier bedtime is the simplest way to get the hours you need. Chapter 1 gives the hours for adults, and Chapter 4 for children.

Your body clock, also called the circadian rhythm, is the inner 24-hour timer that tells you when to feel sleepy and when to wake. It works best when bedtime and wake time stay the same every day, weekends included. Chapter 2 shows how to move your bedtime earlier, step by step.

What India asks us about sleep

India asks us most about back pain: about 110 of the roughly 600 customer emails we received between June 2023 and October 20264.

Sunday makes beds, so people write to us about how they sleep. We counted the sleep questions in our inbox. The counts are approximate, and one email can ask more than one thing.
