Difference between Ortho Memory, Ortho Latex, and Latex Plus models

In short

Choose by firmness first. The Ortho Memory 4 Mattress is the firmest (8 of 10), the Ortho Latex 4 Mattress is medium-firm (7 of 10) and right for most backs, and the Latex Plus 4 Mattress is the softest (6 of 10), the coolest and the longest-lasting. Then check two things: how hot you sleep, and your weight.

Back pain: what the research says

In the largest trial on this, published in The Lancet, 313 adults with long-term low back pain slept on either a firm or a medium-firm mattress for 90 days. The medium-firm group did clearly better on pain while lying in bed and on disability. A 2021 review of 39 studies came to the same answer: medium-firm.

Two things the research does not say. It does not say "the harder, the better": "orthopaedic" should not mean hard. And it does not say memory foam beats latex, or the other way round. Firmness matters; the material matters less.

For most backs: the Ortho Latex 4 Mattress. Medium-firm at 7 of 10: firm foam underneath, 2″ of latex on top so it isn't hard. A mattress is not a treatment; see a doctor for pain that lasts.

How you sleep

  • On your sideYour shoulder and hip need to sink in a little, or they take the pressure. The Latex Plus 4 Mattress, the softest.
  • On your backMedium-firm keeps your lower back supported. The Ortho Latex 4 Mattress.
  • On your stomachA soft mattress lets your hips sink and bends your lower back. Go firmer: the Ortho Memory 4 Mattress or the Ortho Latex 4 Mattress.

What's inside, to scale

The Ortho Memory 4 Mattress also comes 8″ thick in Queen and King: 2″ memory foam over 6″ firm foam. More on what is inside a latex mattress.

If you sleep hot

Memory foam holds body heat; latex is open-celled, so air moves through it. In an Indian summer that is the difference you notice. The Latex Plus 4 Mattress is latex all the way down, so it sleeps coolest. The Ortho Memory 4 Mattress has its memory foam at the surface, so it is the warmest of the three, though it is only 1″ thick.

Your weight

The limit is per person, not for the bed: two people of 120 kg each can share an Ortho Latex 4 Mattress. A heavier person sinks further, so the same mattress feels softer to them. If you are near the limit, go one firmer, or take the Latex Plus 4 Mattress, which carries the most.

How long each lasts

  • Latex Plus 4: 12 to 14 yearsScored 99 of 100 in the LGA durability test. The test
  • The other two: about 10 yearsRotate every three to six months to spread the wear.
  • All three: 10‑year warrantyAgainst sagging and uneven softening.

Independent averages are lower: about 7 to 8 years for latex and 6 to 7 for memory foam, across all brands. A longer life is a large part of what you pay for in latex.

Questions people ask

Which mattress is best for back pain?

Medium-firm did best in the research. That is the Ortho Latex 4 Mattress at 7 of 10. If you like it firmer, the Ortho Memory 4 Mattress is 8 of 10.

Is latex better than memory foam?

For heat and life, yes: latex sleeps cooler and lasts longer. Memory foam absorbs a partner's movement a little better and costs less.

Does memory foam make you sweat at night?

It holds more heat than latex. If you sleep hot, choose the Latex Plus 4 Mattress.

I sleep on my side with shoulder pain. Which one?

The Latex Plus 4 Mattress, our softest: it lets the shoulder sink in instead of pressing on it.

I weigh over 100 kg. Which mattress should I choose?

The Ortho Latex 4 Mattress (up to 120 kg) or the Latex Plus 4 Mattress (up to 140 kg), per sleeper.

Is a firm mattress better for your back?

Not the firmest. In the Lancet trial, medium-firm beat firm for pain and disability.

How long will a latex mattress last?

Ours, the Latex Plus 4 Mattress, usually 12 to 14 years. The other two, about 10.

Can I use a Sunday mattress on an adjustable bed?

The Latex Plus 4 Mattress, yes. The other two need a flat base: a wooden or metal frame, a platform bed or a dry, level floor.

I'm allergic to latex. What should I do?

Ask your doctor first. The Ortho Memory 4 Mattress has no latex at all.

Can I get a custom size?

Yes, in all three, up to 84 × 72 inches, at the price of the next standard size. Sizes and custom sizes
