What does oeko-tex® standard 100 certification mean?

Checked by the Sunday team Updated 3 min read

In short

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 means every part of a material was tested in a lab against a list of more than 1,000 harmful substances. The latex foam from our supplier holds it at Class I, the strictest class, the one set for babies' products. You can check the certificate yourself in 30 seconds: 22.HLK.53176.

Check it yourself

  1. Open the label checkoeko-tex.com, certificate 22.HLK.53176. It is OEKO-TEX's own site, not ours.
  2. Read the first lineIt should say "The certificate is valid". An expired or withdrawn certificate says so.
  3. Read what it coversThe product class and the type of article. A certificate covers only what is written there.

Ask the same of any mattress you are comparing. A brand that says "OEKO-TEX certified" should be able to give you a number.

What the lab tests for

  • Heavy metalsSuch as lead and cadmium.
  • Banned chemicalsSuch as azo dyes and pentachlorophenol.
  • "Forever chemicals"PFAS, used to repel water and stains.
  • Not yet regulatedSubstances known to harm health, even where no law limits them.

The list covers more than 1,000 substances, including every textile-relevant substance on the EU's list of substances of very high concern. The limits are reviewed at least once a year, so a material that passed years ago has to pass the new limits too.

The four classes

The closer a material sits to your skin, the stricter the limits. Mattresses are normally certified at Class II. The latex in ours is certified at Class I.

How a certificate is earned

  1. Samples to a labFrom the maker, to an independent OEKO-TEX institute.
  2. Every part testedIf one part fails, the article is not certified.
  3. One year, then againNew tests every year. Factory visits at least every 3 years, and unannounced visits at any time.

What it does not mean

  • Not organicOrganic latex is a different label, GOLS: at least 95% organic by weight. Our latex is natural, not certified organic.
  • Not a green labelStandard 100 tests the material you touch. How a factory treats people and the planet is a different OEKO-TEX label.
  • Not the whole mattressThis certificate covers the latex. The memory foam, the firm foam and the cover are not part of it.

Which Sunday mattresses it covers

The same latex meets the EuroLatex ECO Standard, which sets limits for latex foam itself. For how long it lasts, see the LGA test.

Questions people ask

Is OEKO-TEX the same as organic?

No. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests for harmful substances. Organic is about how the raw material was grown, and for latex that label is GOLS.

How do I check if an OEKO-TEX certificate is real?

Enter the number on OEKO-TEX's label check, or open this link for ours. It shows whether it is valid, who holds it, the class and what it covers.

What does Class I mean?

The strictest limits, set for products for babies up to 3 years old. Our latex is certified at Class I.

Is an OEKO-TEX mattress non-toxic?

It means the certified material was tested below strict limits for more than 1,000 harmful substances. Nothing is "chemical-free"; this is the closest honest promise.

How long is the certificate valid?

One year. Ours runs to 31 January 2027 and is renewed with new tests.

Does it cover the whole mattress?

Ours covers the latex foam. In the Latex Plus 4 Mattress that is all 8 inches; in the Ortho Latex 4 Mattress, the top 2 inches.

Is Sunday itself OEKO-TEX certified?

No. Certificates belong to a material and its maker. Our latex supplier, Earthfoam in Sri Lanka, holds it.

Can I try the mattress before deciding?

Yes. Sleep on it at home for 100 nights. Not right? We collect it free and refund you.
