How to choose a mattress that is perfect for you

Okay, so you’ve decided to buy a mattress and are familiar with all the big brands calling out to you from hoardings and TVCs. But do you know which one to pick and what criteria to follow? Here are some helpful guidelines:

1. A bed preferably has to be on the button, neither too hard nor soft. Check all the brand names, but without bias. You’ll find brand names to be better, however, don’t omit cheaper non-brand makes. A well-known brand isn’t everything concerning build quality, though, more often than not,  there must be an underlying reason for the unsurpassed reputation. It is important to test one and figure out what feels best for your own body.

2. A high coil count does not account for a superior-quality mattress. Beds with independent coils are comparatively built with more number of coils that are perfect for light sleepers, because they conform to the body movement (particularly when your partner gets out of the bed or shifts positions regularly). A mattress must support you in such a way that it keeps your shoulder, head, heels and buttocks in alignment, thereby allowing your spine to curve naturally.

3. Firmness is an important consideration for your sleeping posture, especially while selecting the best mattress for back pain. Researchers in Spain rated medium-to-firm mattress at 5.6 points on a 10-point hard-to-soft scale making it the best mattress for back pain in comparison to a softer mattress. Memory foam and Latex mattresses work best in this regard.

4. Finally, it’s time to decide on the size of your mattress. If there are two of you in a double bed, a king size model provides you maximum options for cuddling up or spooning or offering each person space to stretch out. A healthy sleeper shifts positions regularly about 15 to 30 times at night. Build with an extra width, it can enable a great night’s sleep. A twin-sized bed is the smallest mattress available and is best suited for a child or an adult. A twin size mattress measures 39 inches in width and 74 inches in length. A twin XL bed size, which is approximately 6 inches longer than a twin mattress, and approximately 39 inches wide by 80 inches long, is suited  for taller adults.

5. Mattresses with health and safety certifications are most reliable. While they are established norms globally, these certifications are still catching up in India. Ensure your mattress is covered under warranty, and, if possible, a trial period, so that you can test it at the convenience of home.

So what are you waiting for? It's time to find your best match and sleep happy!
