Why we named ourselves, Sunday?

After we decided to build a mattress that was highly comfortable, safe and honestly priced, we wanted to choose a name that stood for what we wanted to do. One, which carried the same passion as we felt for our new undertaking.

These were our broad requirements - 

• We felt that we were very different from the existing slew of brands in the market. We are not from the industry and in fact viewed a mattress from a consumer’s point for most of our lives. That made us realise that we pretty much wanted to change everything about a mattress, the whole buying experience in fact. So in short, we wanted something that is different from the existing names!
• While we wanted a different name, we did not want something that was completely unrelated to sleep or the benefits of sleep.
• We wanted something that kind of evokes curious and mildly baffling reaction and forces people to think how it might be related to sleep.
• We wanted a cool and trendy name for the Brand, which defines modern living.
• We also wanted a name that resonates with our global ambitions and is easy to remember universally. One that has great recall value.
• An unspoken requirement was that it should sound just right in the first instance. It should strike a chord with everyone.

We commissioned an agency from London (so UK is the fifth country that was part of the project in addition, to the four that participated in the product development). These guys, who are known for their talent in the industry, are credited with coming up with some familiar household names including the name for the travel card on the London tube, Oyster. They shared some good suggestions such as Aladaka, Zutopia, Schtoh. I liked the name Schtoh and even registered the domain name, just in case!

However, the name did not sound right and I felt it was a bit complicated and confusing. This was the time, I wished I could pick up some simple words like apple, orange etc., for a brand, but then I guess I am probably a few decades late to get those really cool names.

Finally the penny dropped in April. So, bored and tired on a sunday afternoon, I fell asleep on the couch watching TV. I was sleep thinking (not sure how many people do that - this happens when someone is so obsessed with something that they are even thinking even about while sleeping as well).  Then my eureka moment happened! Boom there it was, Sunday!  Suddenly the whole thing started making sense; Sunday is cool, easy to remember, it’s a day that stands for rest in most cultures and brings pleasant memories to mind. 

I ran a quick internet search to make certain it was not used for shop mattress online or other related products. The next morning, I bounced this name off my colleagues and existing investors and it was unanimously loved by all!

So, that’s our little anecdote behind the name, Sunday! As a team, we love the name and have some pretty cool t-shirts with the simple words "I love Sunday".
